What every Indian EV owner should know about battery fires.

A short, no-panic explainer of how lithium-ion fires actually happen and what you can do to prepare.

What is thermal runaway?

A lithium-ion cell stores a lot of energy in a small space. When a single cell fails — from heat, an internal short, or external damage — the chemistry inside can begin to break down and release oxygen. That feeds the fire from the inside. Once one cell goes, the heat triggers its neighbours, and the entire pack can light up in minutes. This chain reaction is called thermal runaway.

Why a regular extinguisher isn't enough

ABC dry powder and CO₂ extinguishers smother surface flames by removing oxygen — but a Li-ion cell makes its own oxygen as it fails. That's why EV fires re-ignite, sometimes hours after they look like they're out. To stop the cascade you need to do two things at once: cool the cells below the runaway threshold (around 250°C), and physically isolate them from each other.

How VoltexR works

VoltexR is a water-based polymer gel with embedded coolants. When you discharge it onto a smoking or burning battery, three things happen at once:

  1. The gel coats the cells, cutting off oxygen contact at the surface.
  2. The water in the gel evaporates and pulls heat away — dropping cell temperature past the runaway threshold in seconds.
  3. The polymer film stays in place for 30+ minutes, preventing re-ignition long enough for the fire services to arrive and remove the pack safely.

What to do if your EV starts smoking

  1. Stop and get out. Don't try to ride or drive. Park clear of other vehicles and combustibles.
  2. Get distance. Put 5–10 metres between you and the vehicle, and warn anyone nearby.
  3. Call 112 (national emergency number) or your local fire service. Tell them it's a lithium-ion battery fire.
  4. Use VoltexR if it's safe. Pull the safety pin, aim at the source of smoke or flame, squeeze the trigger and sweep across the pack. One canister discharges in about 12 seconds.
  5. Stay back and let the gel work. Even after flames are out, the pack stays hot for 30+ minutes. Do not touch it.

Where to keep VoltexR on your vehicle

  • Scooter / bike: under the seat with the included velcro strap.
  • Car / SUV: in the glovebox with the adhesive bracket. We recommend a second canister in the boot for cars with rear-mounted packs.

What if I never need it?

Then it's done its job. We hope every VoltexR ever sold sits unused in a glovebox forever. Like a seatbelt or a smoke alarm, it's the kind of insurance you only notice when you're glad you had it.
